COMEX copper settled at a record $6.77 per pound on August 7, 2026, the day after the Democratic Republic of Congo banned concentrate exports. The 50% Section 232 copper tariff has been in force since August 1, 2025, and it does not apply to the cathode that price is quoted on. It shows up anyway. A 200-amp residential service that carried $270 of copper metal at 2024 prices carries $440 today, and about $30 of that is the tariff expectation priced into COMEX rather than the metal itself. This piece weighs the panel, traces the price from cathode to distributor counter, and shows what the number means for a 400-amp commercial feeder.

The global monthly average was $4.15 per pound across 2024, $5.35 in December 2025 and $6.14 in July 2026, 48% above the 2024 average. The Copper and Wire Price Sheet converts that series to $/ft by conductor size weekly and carries the copper wire PPI beside it; the Lead-Time Monitor’s published lead time for LV switchboards is 32 to 41 weeks (Siemens schedule as republished, Aug 2026), which is why a copper quote from today is installed against a price from next spring.

The Tariff That Is Not on the Metal

Proclamation 10962 of July 30, 2025 imposed a 50% duty on “semi-finished copper products and intensive copper derivative products” entered from 12:01 a.m. on August 1, 2025, and left refined copper, ores, concentrates and scrap out. Commerce had recommended a phased universal tariff on refined copper of 15% from 2027 and 30% from 2028; the President did not adopt it and instead ordered an update on the domestic market by June 30, 2026. The market had priced a 50% tariff on everything, and when the exemption landed the COMEX premium over LME collapsed from about $2,937 a tonne in late July 2025 to an average of $130 a tonne through mid-September, against an $18 average before 2025.

The spread was $110 a tonne on April 10, 2026, about $400 in early June, nearly $600 on July 21, and the December 2026 contract traded close to $1,000 a tonne over LME by mid-August. Societe Generale reads that premium as a 14.6% probability of the 15% refined-copper tariff by January 2027 and a 37% probability of 30% by January 2028; the US imported more than 200,000 tonnes of copper in July 2026, the most in twelve years, to get ahead of it. US building-wire pricing keys off COMEX, so a $1,000 premium is $0.45 a pound on every conductor sold in the country, tariff or no tariff.

The June 30 deadline passed with no refined-copper action. Border States’ July 13 commodity update says so plainly and reports that copper suppliers announced a 7.5% price increase on July 10, 2026 with COMEX at $6.28. What did change is the derivative regime: Proclamation 11021 of April 2, 2026 applies the Section 232 duty to the full customs value “regardless of metal content” from April 6, 2026, at 50% for the copper articles in Annex I-A and 25% for the derivatives in Annex I-B, with 10% where the copper was smelted and cast in the US. A June 4, 2026 proclamation cut the US-content threshold from 95% to 85% from June 8; ING reads the same instrument as extending the copper scope to electrical conductors and cables, which we could not confirm in the published annexes and treat as unverified. The Tariff Exposure Calculator carries each of these instruments by HTS line with its Federal Register citation, and the Tariff Bill of Materials (October 2025) worked the 50%-on-content rule through a UPS, a switchgear lineup and a Megapack before the April rewrite.

What a Pound of Copper Becomes in Wire

The BLS producer price index for copper wire and cable, WPU10260314, stood at 578.2 in July 2026, up 17.9% on July 2025 and 95% on December 2019. It ran 23.6% year over year in June. The Copper and Wire Price Sheet carries this series because wire is the one electrical commodity that reprices weekly; the Lead-Time Monitor launch note (September 2025) set out the transformer and switchgear PPI series the Monitor carries beside the Schneider and Siemens schedules. The ISM has recorded copper “up in price” for 14 consecutive months through August 2026 and electrical components “in short supply” for the same 14.

A 2/0 AWG copper conductor weighs about 411 lb per thousand feet bare, so its metal is worth $1.71 a foot at $4.15, $2.30 at $5.60 and $2.78 at $6.77; 600 kcmil is 1,852 lb per thousand feet and moves from $7.69 to $12.54 over the same range. Those are metal values, and finished wire sells for well above them. Buildermuse’s April 2026 sheet put 12 AWG THHN at $298 per thousand feet with copper at $6.01; 12 AWG carries 20.2 lb of copper, or $121 of metal, so the cathode was 41% of the counter price and drawing, insulation, mill margin and distributor margin were the other 59%. The same sheet claims 12 AWG is “~90% copper by cost”, which its own numbers contradict. The smaller the conductor, the less the copper price explains; on 12 AWG the metal is two fifths of the price, on 600 kcmil it is most of it.

Distributor margin on wire is disclosed, if you know where to look. Graybar’s 2025 10-K reports a gross margin rate of 19.3%, down from 20.1% in 2024, “primarily due to competitive pricing pressures”. WESCO’s cost of goods sold was 78.9% of net sales in 2025 against 78.4% in 2024, a 21.1% gross margin. Those are blended rates; wire runs thinner than lighting or gear, and our Public Bid-Tab Price Book will publish wire awards by conductor size once the cell rules are met, as it does for pad-mounts and switchgear sections today.

The 200-Amp Panel, Weighed

NEC 310.12 lets a single-phase dwelling service use conductors rated at 83% of the service rating, so a 200 A service needs 166 A of ampacity: 2/0 copper at 175 A in the 75°C column, or 4/0 aluminum at 180 A, per the NEC 310.16 values Cerrowire republishes. We modeled two ungrounded conductors and a full-size neutral in 2/0 copper over a 50 ft run from meter to panel, plus 25 ft of #4 copper grounding electrode conductor. That is 65 lb of copper: $270 at the 2024 average, $364 at the end-2025 price and $440 at $6.77.

Against a 200 A load center at $285 and twenty breakers at about $180 (Buildermuse, April 2026, vendor pricing), the conductor copper is 37% of the material bill at 2024 prices and 49% at the August 2026 record, and the whole material bill rose from $734 to $904, or 23%. The load center itself carries bus bars and lugs we did not weigh; Buildermuse puts a 200 A load center at 40 to 60% copper by weight and its price up 12.2% year over year, so the true copper share is higher than the chart shows. The Copper and Wire Price Sheet prints the copper pounds for any conductor schedule, which is the one number the escalation clause below cannot work without.

Here is what the 50% tariff itself does to that panel. At a $1,000 a tonne COMEX premium, $0.45 a pound, the tariff expectation is $29 of the $440 of copper in the service. The other $141 of the increase since 2024 is the world price: Grasberg, the DRC, sulphuric acid, datacenters. On a residential 200 A service the tariff is a $30 line; the copper market is a $170 line; and the labor to install it, which we do not model here, is the largest line of all. I read a lot of panel-upgrade quotes during the Mister Sparky diligence, and none of them itemized copper. They should now.

Who Absorbs It: Mills, Distributors, Contractors

Atkore, which buys copper rod from AmRod, SDI LaFarga and Nexans per its FY2025 10-K, reported for the quarter ended June 26, 2026 that average selling prices added $22.4 million while input costs added $48.9 million, taking gross margin from 23.4% to 22.2%. Two days later it agreed to be acquired by Prysmian at $95.00 a share, an enterprise value of about $3.8 billion, a 30% premium to the July 31 close. Prysmian bought Encore Wire in 2024, so Encore’s building wire and Atkore’s conduit and armored cable will sit under one Italian parent. Southwire is private and publishes no filings; its price letters reach the market through distributors, which is why the Border States bulletin is the best public record of a wire price move.

Distributors pass copper through fast and absorb little. Border States reported a 7% to 10% increase on finished aluminum goods on March 9, 2026 and the 7.5% copper increase on July 10; Graybar and WESCO both gave up 50 to 80 basis points of gross margin in 2025 on “competitive pricing pressures”, not on copper. The Rockwell take (December 2025) found 100 basis points of tariff pass-through in PLC quotes; on wire the pass-through is closer to 100% because the mills reprice weekly against COMEX and the distributor’s price sheet follows within days. The contractor is the buyer who holds a bid open for 45 to 120 days while the price moves; the switchgear cost decomposition (November 2025) found the same pattern one tier up, with switchgear PPI up 14.5% year over year and lead times of 52 to 104 weeks.

What to Do Monday

Price wire off the sheet, not the bid. The Copper and Wire Price Sheet publishes COMEX and the $/ft metal value by conductor size weekly; put the date and the price in the bid and make the conductor line move with it. Buy conductors the week the permit issues; wire stores, and a 45-day gap between bid and purchase at the end-2025 to August 2026 slope cost about $0.10 a foot on 2/0. Check the gear lines of the electrical package against Quote Check, which returns the Bid-Tab band and the Monitor’s published lead time for a switchboard or transformer spec, with n and date. For a service over 400 A, run the aluminum case before the copper one, and run it with the Tariff Exposure Calculator open, because the aluminum Section 232 rate is 50% on full value and the US delivered price carries its own premium. Watch the Monitor for LV switchboard lead times, because a 32-week switchboard turns a copper quote into a copper forecast, and contribute the wire lines from your last three quotes to the Equipment Price Benchmark, which publishes nothing until a cell has five contributors and eight quotes.

Behind the paywall: the escalation clause language we would sign, indexed to COMEX with a 5% deadband, and the aluminum math for a 400 A feeder, where two parallel sets of 250 kcmil aluminum carry $473 of metal against $2,803 for the copper equivalent at August 2026 prices, before conduit upsizing takes some of it back. The Copper and Wire Price Sheet runs both calculations on live prices.
